What type of hair do you have?

... Read moreAchieving truly knee-length hair isn't just about letting it grow; it's about understanding your hair's unique needs every step of the way. When I first started my journey to super long hair, I was clueless! My hair would grow a bit, then break, frizz, or just look dull. That's when I discovered the game-changer: hair porosity. It completely transformed how I cared for my strands, especially now that they're getting so long! Think about it: the longer your hair gets, the older the ends are, and the more they've been exposed to styling, environmental factors, and general wear and tear. This often means the ends can become more porous, even if your roots are low porosity. Knowing your hair's porosity – whether it's low, medium, or high – is absolutely critical for preventing breakage, maintaining moisture, and getting that stunning length. For Low Porosity & Long Hair: If you have low porosity hair, moisture struggles to get in because the cuticles are tightly packed. For long hair, this means heavy products, oils, and butters can easily lead to product build-up, making your hair look greasy and weighed down, not to mention hindering healthy growth. I've learned that water rinses and lighter, water-based leave-ins are my best friends. Regular clarifying is a must, and those protein treatments need to be used sparingly, as too much protein can make low porosity hair stiff and brittle. My dry times are definitely longer dry times, so I've embraced air-drying or very low heat. For High Porosity & Long Hair: On the flip side, high porosity hair, which my ends tend to become after years of styling, is like a sponge – it soaks up moisture quickly but also loses it just as fast. This is because the cuticles are raised / damaged, leading to poor retention rate, frizz, dry and damage. If your goal is knee-length, you absolutely need products that seal that moisture in! Look for creams and heavier conditioners. I swear by routines that incorporate hyaluronic acid and glycerin to draw moisture in, followed by a good oil or butter to seal it. K18 products have also been a lifesaver for repairing damaged cuticles and keeping my ends healthy. Regular trims are non-negotiable to prevent split ends from traveling up the hair shaft. For Medium Porosity & Long Hair: If you're lucky enough to have medium porosity hair, congratulations! You have the just right porosity. Your cuticles are slightly raised but not too open, making normal adsorption rate possible. You respond well to most products, but don't get complacent when aiming for extreme length! Even medium porosity hair needs consistent care. I recommend still paying attention to sealing the ends, especially as they get older, and ensuring you're not overwashing. A good balance of moisture and protein will keep your long strands strong and prevent future damage. Regardless of your porosity, a key to avoiding product build-up and ensuring your long hair gets what it needs is gentle handling. Detangle from the ends up, use silk pillowcases, and consider protective styles. Understanding your hair's porosity isn't just a fun fact; it's the personalized roadmap to giving your knee-length dreams the best chance to flourish. Trust me, once you figure it out, your hair care routine will finally make sense, and you'll see incredible progress towards those truly healthy, long locks!
