... Read moreHey everyone! It took me a while to truly understand my hair, but once I figured out my type and porosity, my hair journey completely transformed. If you've been asking "What's my hair type?" or "How do I find what hair type you have?" or even "How do I do a hair porosity test?" – you're in the right place! Knowing your hair's unique characteristics, especially its porosity, is like having a secret weapon for hair care. It helps you pick the right products and techniques that actually work, instead of blindly trying everything. Think about it: products that absorb well into high porosity hair might just sit on top of low porosity hair, leaving it greasy or weighed down. So, let's dive into some easy ways to figure out your hair's secrets! The Porosity Test: Simple & Revealing The most popular and easiest method is the Float Test. You'll need a clean strand of hair (from your brush or after washing) and a glass of water at room temperature. Drop the strand into the water and watch it for a few minutes: If it sinks quickly: You likely have high porosity hair. Your hair cuticles are raised, absorbing moisture easily but also losing it quickly. If it floats at the top: This suggests low porosity hair. Your cuticles are tightly sealed, making it hard for moisture to get in, but once it's in, it stays. If it hovers in the middle: You've got normal/medium porosity hair. Your cuticles are slightly less compact than low porosity, allowing for good moisture balance. Another quick test is the Spray Test. Take a small section of clean, dry hair and spritz it lightly with water. If the water beads up on the surface, you likely have low porosity. If it's quickly absorbed, it's more likely high porosity. Getting to Know Low Porosity Hair – Like Mine! As someone embracing my 3C low porosity hair, I can tell you that "If you have low porosity hair this the place to be!" is absolutely true. For us low-po folks, our hair cuticles are tightly laid, almost like shingles on a roof. This makes it challenging for moisture to penetrate the hair shaft, but once it's in, it tends to stay locked in. This can mean our hair takes a long time to get fully wet, products might sit on top and feel heavy, and it can be prone to product buildup. Tips for Caring for Low Porosity Hair: Use Heat Wisely: Applying gentle heat (like from a steamer, warm towel, or even just washing with warm water) can help slightly lift the cuticles, allowing products to penetrate better. Lightweight Products: Opt for water-based, lightweight conditioners, leave-ins, and styling creams. Avoid heavy butters and oils that can sit on the surface. Clarify Regularly: Our tightly sealed cuticles can easily accumulate product buildup. A gentle clarifying shampoo every few weeks can make a big difference. Focus on Penetrating Moisture: Look for ingredients like honey, glycerin, and aloe vera, which are humectants that attract and hold moisture. While porosity tells you how your hair absorbs moisture, hair typing (like 3C, which describes my curl pattern) describes its unique shape and texture. Together, this knowledge empowers you to create a personalized hair care routine that truly nurtures your strands. Once you know your porosity and hair type, you'll feel much more confident in making product choices and seeing real results on your hair journey!
