Introducing New Foods to My ADHD Picky Eater

My son has ADHD and he’s a super picky eater, especially with textures. His medication also suppresses his appetite, so getting him to try new foods can be a challenge.

Today I made him this bread-bowl chicken noodle soup, and he actually ate it! 🥹❤️

It might look messy, but for us this is a BIG win. Every little step counts when you’re raising a kid with sensory needs and appetite changes. Proud mom moment.

... Read moreAs a parent of a child with ADHD who is also a picky eater, especially sensitive to food textures, it can be quite challenging to broaden their diet. Children with ADHD often face additional hurdles such as medication-induced appetite suppression, making every bite a small victory. One effective approach is to introduce new foods gradually and creatively, focusing on textures your child is comfortable with while gently expanding their palate. Using familiar comfort foods like chicken noodle soup served in a fun bread bowl can be particularly helpful. This method not only makes the meal more engaging but also allows the child to experience new flavors within a safe and appealing presentation. Sensory-friendly meals that consider texture, temperature, and visual appeal tend to yield better acceptance. Incorporating nutrient-rich ingredients without overwhelming sensory input supports both health and enjoyment. Consistency and patience are key; offering small portions repeatedly can reduce resistance over time. Engaging your child in food preparation may also increase their willingness to try new dishes since involvement boosts interest and control. Additionally, consulting with occupational therapists or nutritionists specializing in sensory processing can provide tailored strategies for your unique family needs. Remember, progress looks different for every child. Celebrating small wins, like enjoying a seemingly messy but nourishing meal, reinforces positive associations with food rather than pressure or frustration. Building a supportive mealtime environment encourages exploration and gradually expands dietary acceptance in neurodivergent children, ultimately fostering healthier relationships with food and eating habits.
