🌱Converting My Monstera Plant To Water

2025/1/12 Edited to

... Read moreHey plant lovers! So many of you asked about my journey with growing Monstera in water, and I'm thrilled to share more detailed insights beyond just converting them! It's truly a game-changer for plant care, especially if you're like me and love a clean, soil-free environment. First off, let's talk about the big question: Can Monstera deliciosa really live and thrive in water long-term? Absolutely, with the right approach! I've had several Monstera plants, including my prized *Monstera deliciosa*, happily flourishing in water for months, even years. The key is understanding their needs. Converting Your Soil-Grown Monstera to Water: A Deeper Dive When you decide to make the switch, a crucial step is thorough root cleaning. Gently remove all soil, making sure no particles are clinging to the roots. This prevents rot and helps your plant acclimate. After cleaning, trim any damaged or dead roots. Place your Monstera in a vase or container, ensuring only the roots are submerged, not the stem or leaves. I usually start with filtered or distilled water, changing it every few days initially. This helps reduce the shock and provides a fresh environment for new water roots to form. Propagating Your Monstera in Water: My Favorite Method! Water propagation is incredibly rewarding. If you're wondering where to cut your Monstera to propagate in water, look for a "node." This is a small bump or ring on the stem, often where a leaf or aerial root emerges. You'll want to make your cut about an inch below a node, ensuring your cutting has at least one node and one or two leaves. Having a Monstera node cutting diagram labeled would show you exactly where to aim – it's crucial for root development! I've found that cuttings with an aerial root already starting tend to root even faster. Just place your cutting in a clear glass of water, ensuring the node is submerged, and watch the magic happen! Change the water weekly to keep it fresh and prevent bacterial growth. Long-Term Care for Your Hydroponic Monstera Once your Monstera has established a good root system in water, the care shifts slightly. You can't just rely on plain water forever. This is where Monstera hydroponic fertilizer comes in. I use a diluted liquid hydroponic nutrient solution specifically designed for houseplants. Follow the instructions carefully, usually adding it during your weekly or bi-weekly water changes. Regular water changes are essential to replenish oxygen and nutrients and to prevent algae buildup. I aim for a full water change every 1-2 weeks. Regarding "Monstera aquatica," while your Monstera won't actually become an aquatic plant, growing it in water gives it a unique, clean aesthetic. It's a fantastic way to display their beautiful root systems. Just remember, they still need plenty of indirect light and occasional leaf cleaning to thrive. Embracing water culture for your Monstera can open up a whole new world of plant enjoyment!

How do you know where to cut them? I was just gonna stick my entire plant, roots and all, in a vase. 😬

I should have transferred my monstera to water, instead I gave it to a coworker
