Living with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) presents many challenges, particularly when it comes to sleeping. One personal insight I'd like to share is how much a wedge or inclined bed has transformed my nights and overall symptom management. Sleeping flat on your back can cause blood to pool in your legs and feet, which then rushes back to your chest and head upon lying down. This shift often triggers an adrenaline surge and symptoms like dizziness, racing heart, and anxiety. Using a wedge pillow or an adjustable inclined bed keeps your upper body elevated, reducing this blood pooling effect. This elevation not only helps prevent adrenaline spikes but also tricks your kidneys into thinking the body is not overloaded with fluids. When your kidneys are above your feet, they reduce excessive fluid processing, helping to maintain better blood volume and reducing nocturia—the frequent need to urinate at night—which is a common and frustrating symptom in POTS. Another major benefit I've noticed is relief in acid reflux and digestive discomfort. Many people with POTS also suffer from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Lying flat allows stomach acids to travel upwards, irritating the esophagus and vocal cords, sometimes worsening vocal cord dysfunction that often accompanies POTS. Sleeping on a wedge counteracts this by using gravity to keep stomach acids where they belong, which helps reduce symptoms like throat irritation, nausea, and bloating. In my experience, finding the right degree of incline and pillow height is key. It’s not just about elevating your head; ideally, your hips should be elevated above your feet to enhance circulation further and ease symptoms. This adjustment promotes better gastrointestinal motility and reduces discomfort from delayed gastric emptying—a common POTS-associated issue. Overall, incorporating a wedge or inclined sleeping position has significantly improved my quality of sleep, decreased my nighttime bathroom visits, and helped me better manage POTS symptoms. It's a simple and effective change that can help others living with similar struggles thrive and reclaim restful nights.
