Where are my hypermobiles at? 🤪 I know we’re not all the same, but let me know if you relate! 😜
As someone who lives with hypermobility, I can totally relate to these scenarios. Everyday activities that seem simple to most, like holding a glass of water or yawning, can be unexpectedly challenging and sometimes painful for us hypermobile folks. For instance, when yawning, the risk of subluxating the jaw is real and uncomfortable, which is something many people don’t realize. Trying new medications is another nerve-wracking experience. While most people might feel excited or hopeful, hypermobile individuals often approach new prescriptions with caution due to a history of sensitive side effects such as air hunger, akathisia, or dyskinesia. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions—excitement mixed with anxiety, hoping for relief without adding new issues. Physical therapy sessions also look very different for hypermobile people. Where others might be encouraged by increasing range of motion, there’s always the fine line to avoid overstretching joints or provoking pain due to excessive flexibility. Therapists need to understand these nuances and tailor treatment plans accordingly. If you identify as hypermobile or know someone who is, it’s important to embrace these shared experiences and support each other. Sharing tips, understanding symptoms, and connecting over challenges can make a huge difference in coping and managing this condition. Remember, while hypermobility affects us in various ways, we’re definitely not alone.
