Calming my nervous system: what i wish i knew

It doesn’t feel personal because you’re “too sensitive.”

It feels personal because your brain and your nervous system never got a clear ending.

And when there’s no ending, the mind doesn’t move on, it keeps searching.

That’s the part most people miss.

You weren’t just hurt by what he did.

Your nervous system registered an interruption without resolution.

You were left with a gap your brain is trying to fill:

What happened?

What changed?

What did I miss?

And without an answer, your mind does what it’s designed to do:

→ replay it

→ analyze it

→ revisit it

→ try to make meaning out of silence

That’s why it lingers.

Not because he was “the one.”

Not because you’re weak.

But because unfinished patterns keep your nervous system activated longer than painful ones with clarity.

And this is where most women accidentally keep it alive.

Not through emotion—through behavior.

👀Checking his page.

💬Re-reading messages.

🙇‍♀️Letting one thought turn into ten.

It feels small.

But it tells your brain:

“This still matters.”

So your nervous system stays engaged…and the loop continues.

The shift isn’t forcing yourself to “move on.”

It’s recognizing:

You’re not dealing with him anymore.

You’re interacting with a loop your mind and nervous system are trying to resolve.

And loops don’t close with time.

They close with meaning.

Once you define it—clearly, honestly, without waiting for him, your brain stops searching and your nervous system can finally settle.

That’s what actually gives you relief.

📝 Journaling prompt (use this instead of checking):

What story am I trying to complete right now—and what is actually true?

💬 What part of ghosting keeps your mind going back the most?

4/3 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my personal experience, the hardest part after being ghosted wasn't just the silence itself, but the constant loop my brain fell into, trying to find meaning where there was none given. What I found helpful in calming my nervous system was recognizing that the mind craves closure, and when it doesn’t get a clear answer, it can keep replaying the situation endlessly. One practical step I took was to stop behaviors that kept the loop alive—like checking the other person’s social media or rereading old messages—which was reinforcing the idea that "this still matters" and keeping my nervous system activated. Instead, I replaced those habits with honest self-reflection through journaling. Asking myself questions such as "What story am I trying to complete right now?" and "What is actually true?" helped me to put my feelings into words and acknowledge the reality without waiting for someone else’s explanation. I also learned that while time is often suggested as a healer, it’s really the meaning we assign to our experiences that allows the nervous system to settle. By consciously defining what exactly caused the emotional loop, I could interrupt the endless searching my brain was doing and begin to move forward. This process reshaped my understanding of sensitivity—not as a weakness, but as my nervous system's way of signalling an unresolved interruption. Sharing and reading others’ stories about anxious hearts and ghosting can also provide a sense of community and understanding that these feelings are normal and shared by many. Forums and groups under tags like #anxiousheart, #ghosting, and #relationshipsharing are great places to express yourself and feel less alone. Ultimately, treating your nervous system with kindness, using mindful journaling prompts, and breaking the cycle of behaviors that fuel the loop can bring real relief and help you regain peace and emotional balance.
