My body before and after my period

2023/6/20 Edited to

... Read moreIt's so real, isn't it? That feeling when your body just… shifts a few days before your period arrives. I know I'm not alone in noticing those significant changes, especially around my stomach. Like those '1 week before' and '1 day before' photos show, the difference can be really noticeable. It's not just in our heads – our bodies are actually undergoing some pretty intense hormonal fluctuations that lead to what we commonly call 'period bloat' or 'water retention period.' So, why does this happen? Around the time of ovulation until your period starts, there's a surge in progesterone. This hormone can cause your digestive system to slow down, leading to more gas and constipation, which definitely contributes to that 'swollen stomach before period' feeling. On top of that, hormonal shifts, especially with estrogen, can make your body retain more water and sodium. This is why you might feel heavier or even wonder, "why do I look fatter on my period?" It's not fat, it's temporary fluid retention! This can make your belly feel tight and uncomfortable, and suddenly your favorite jeans feel a size too small. I've definitely experienced feeling like my 'belly before and after period' photos could be two different people! It's wild how much our 'stomach before and after period' can vary. But over time, I've learned to embrace these 'period body changes' as a natural part of my cycle. What helps me sometimes is focusing on a few simple things. Hydration is key – drinking plenty of water actually helps flush out excess sodium and reduce water retention. I also try to cut down on salty and processed foods in the days leading up to my period, as these can exacerbate bloating. Eating fiber-rich foods can also help keep my digestion regular, combating that gassy feeling. Gentle exercise, like a walk or light yoga, can also work wonders to get things moving and alleviate some discomfort. For me, sometimes even a warm bath or a hot water bottle on my stomach can provide a lot of relief. It's important to remember that these 'before and after bloated stomach' moments are completely normal. Every body experiences its cycle differently, but the underlying hormonal shifts causing 'bloat from period' are universal. Instead of feeling down about it, I try to see it as my body preparing for its natural process. It's a sign of health! Let's continue to support each other in normalizing 'period bloating' and celebrating our bodies in all their stages. We are strong, and these transient changes don't define us. Just like the images show, it's a temporary visitor, and soon enough, your body will return to its usual self. Stay kind to yourself!
