Why aren’t you unraveling your braids like this??✨

Taking my braids out

Had my braid in for 3 weeks but since I have very short 4c hair, they looked like they were going on months so I took them out

Products used:

- @heritagestorenaturals castor oil

- Avocado oil

- @camillerosenaturals honey hydration conditioner

- @sheamoisture shampoo and conditioner

- hair fertilizer

... Read moreHey naturalistas! We all love a good protective style, especially braids, for growing out our beautiful 4C hair. Whether you're eyeing styles inspired by celebs like North West or just rocking your fav box braids, the journey doesn't end when they're installed. The real magic (and sometimes the real challenge!) comes with how you care for them and, crucially, how you take them out. Trust me, I've learned a lot over the years, and I'm here to share my expanded routine to keep your curls thriving from start to finish! Before you even think about getting those gorgeous braids, proper preparation is key, especially for our delicate 4C strands. I always start with a really good cleanse and deep condition. This ensures your hair is strong and moisturized, ready to be tucked away. Think of it as laying a solid foundation for a healthy growth period. While your braids are in, don't forget them! Scalp care is paramount. I swear by a light oil blend – something like peppermint or tea tree oil diluted in jojoba – applied directly to my scalp a few times a week. It keeps dryness and itchiness at bay. And please, please, please moisturize your braids! A light leave-in conditioner spray helps keep your hair hydrated within the braids, preventing them from drying out. Now, for the part my original post touched on: Taking My Braids Out. This is where patience truly becomes a virtue. I used to dread this step, but I've perfected a gentle method. First, grab a good detangling comb, a spray bottle with water and conditioner, and your favorite oil (I love my castor oil and avocado oil blend!). I always start by snipping the very ends of the braids, being super careful not to cut my actual hair. Then, I section my hair off and work on one braid at a time. I saturate each braid with my conditioner-water mix and a bit of oil. This helps to loosen any product buildup and makes the hair slippery, reducing friction. Slowly, gently, I start to unravel from the bottom up. When I see that accumulated shed hair, I don't panic! It's normal to lose strands each day, and when your hair is in a protective style, that shed hair has nowhere to go until you OPEN up those braids. So, be gentle. Finger-detangling as you go is a lifesaver. This slow, methodical approach prevents breakage and helps retain length. I sometimes even put on a good movie to pass the time while I'm Taking My braids out! Once all the braids are out, it's time for the crucial post-braid care. Your hair will probably feel a bit matted or tangled, but resist the urge to vigorously comb. Instead, apply a generous amount of conditioner and work through it with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends and slowly moving up. This is usually when I do my first wash. I like to use a clarifying shampoo to remove all the old product buildup, followed by a super hydrating conditioner and a deep conditioning treatment. Remember, protective styles are amazing for hair growth and length retention, but only if you treat your hair with love throughout the entire process. From the moment you decide on a style, inspired by the latest trends or not, to the final wash after removal, consistent and gentle care is non-negotiable for healthy, beautiful 4C hair. Happy braiding (and unbraiding!)!
