When your light is too big for an environment, you unintentionally send people into survival mode 😩 their ego makes them feel like you’re taking what’s theirs
In many social and professional settings, being an exceptionally confident or successful individual can sometimes lead to unexpected reactions from others. When your 'light'—which can be interpreted as your talents, achievements, or personality—exceeds what is typical in the environment, people around you might feel uneasy. This discomfort often stems from their ego perceiving your presence as a threat to their own standing or security. I've experienced this dynamic firsthand in several workplaces and community groups. At times, my enthusiasm or different approach was met with subtle resistance or coldness, which later I realized was not about me personally but about how my presence disrupted the existing comfort zone of others. It's as if they entered a survival mode, trying to protect their sense of belonging and importance. Understanding this psychological response helps in navigating relationships more compassionately. Rather than dimming your light to fit in, I’ve found success in fostering open communication and empathy. Explaining your intentions and appreciating others' perspectives can ease their defensiveness. Additionally, being mindful of timing and setting when expressing your strengths can make a significant difference. It's important to remember that this reaction is natural but often unconscious. Don't feel guilty for shining bright; instead, recognize these moments as opportunities to build stronger, more authentic connections. By balancing self-expression with awareness of your environment, you empower yourself and others to grow beyond survival mode into a space of mutual support and encouragement.
