... Read moreI know the struggle – wanting beautiful curls but dreading the damage from heat tools. That's why I became obsessed with heatless curl methods, and let me tell you, the Double Unicorn Curls method has been a total game-changer for me! Not only does it protect my hair, but it's genuinely the most comfortable way to sleep in curls I've ever found. Forget stiff rollers or bulky rods; this method is surprisingly soft against your head. So, what exactly are Double Unicorn Curls? It's a variation of the popular heatless curler technique, often using a long, soft rod or headband. The 'unicorn' part comes from placing the rod over the top of your head, making it look like a unicorn horn. The 'double' typically refers to sectioning your hair into two main parts—often a top and bottom section—to wrap around the rod, which can help create more defined curls or accommodate longer/thicker hair. For me, it gives such a lovely, consistent wave that looks natural and effortless. Here’s my personal step-by-step guide to achieving perfect Double Unicorn Curls: What You'll Need: A long, soft heatless curling rod (mine is usually silk or satin-covered for less friction). Two scrunchies (silk or satin are best to prevent creases). A spray bottle with water (if your hair isn't already slightly damp). Optional: A light leave-in conditioner or curl cream for extra hold and hydration. My Method for Gorgeous Curls: Damp, Not Wet: I usually start with hair that's about 80% dry. If it's too wet, it won't dry overnight, and if it's too dry, the curls won't hold. I lightly mist my hair with water if it's completely dry, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Sectioning is Key: This is where the 'double' comes in for me. I part my hair down the middle, then take a horizontal section from ear to ear, clipping up the top half for now. This creates a bottom section and a top section. Placement: I place the heatless curling rod directly on top of my head, centered, so the two ends hang down over my shoulders. Start Wrapping (Bottom Section First): I unclip the bottom section. Taking a small piece of hair from the front of one side, near my face, I wrap it away from my face around the rod. Then, I add a new small section of hair to the piece I just wrapped, incorporating it and wrapping again. I continue this, picking up new sections of hair as I work my way down until all the hair on that side of the bottom section is wrapped around the rod. I secure the end with a scrunchie. Repeat on the other side for the bottom section. Wrap the Top Section: Now, I unclip the top section. I repeat the same wrapping process, starting from the front, adding new pieces, and wrapping away from my face around the same rod. This makes it a 'double' wrap on each side, but utilizing the same central rod. Secure the ends with the remaining scrunchie. Sleep Comfortably: This is the best part! Because the rod is soft, I find it incredibly comfortable to sleep in. I usually sleep on my back initially, then can turn to my side without much issue. The Reveal: In the morning, I gently remove the scrunchies and then carefully lift the rod upwards off my head. My curls fall beautifully! I usually separate them with my fingers rather than a brush for a softer look, and maybe spritz a little flexible hold hairspray. Pro-Tips for Lasting Unicorn Curls: Hair Prep: A tiny bit of mousse or curl cream applied before wrapping can enhance definition and hold. Tightness: The tighter you wrap, the tighter the curl. Experiment to find your preferred level of tightness. Patience: Let your hair dry completely on the rod for the best results. This usually means leaving it in overnight. Refresh: On day two, I often mist with water and scrunch for a refresh, or turn them into a cute updo. This Heatless Curl Method has truly transformed my hair routine, giving me beautiful, healthy curls without any damage. Double Unicorn Curls are my absolute favorite because of the comfort and gorgeous results. Give it a try, and you might just find your new go-to too!
