My Loc Journey 🫶✨

2024/2/9 Edited to

... Read moreHey amazing loc fam! I've been getting so many questions about my own loc journey, especially with all the color changes I've done over the past 2.5 years. It's been such a ride, from those tiny 'DAY 1 STARTERS' in a two-strand twist to rocking 'bright blonde locs' today! It feels like just yesterday I was looking at my 'WEEK 2' pigtails, marveling at how quickly my hair was transforming. Starting out, the 'starter locs' phase, as you saw in my pictures, was all about letting my hair learn its new form. Those initial weeks and months are crucial for establishing your loc pattern. I learned quickly that patience is truly a virtue during this time. Regular, gentle cleansing and keeping my scalp healthy were paramount. I made sure to mist my hair daily with a light rosewater mix to keep it from getting too dry, especially after seeing how my hair reacted to different climates. Then came the fun part: color! My journey through 'ginger,' 'auburn,' and eventually 'blonde' has taught me a lot about maintaining loc health while experimenting. When I decided to go 'blonde,' it definitely required extra care. Bleaching can be harsh on any hair, but with locs, it's even more important to proceed with caution. I always recommend going to a professional who specializes in locs and understands how to lighten them without compromising their integrity. After any chemical treatment, deep conditioning treatments became my best friend. I'd use a protein-free conditioner, let it sit, and then rinse thoroughly. Keeping them moisturized with light oils like jojoba or argan oil, along with my trusty rosewater spray, helped prevent any potential damage or dryness. I made sure to pay particular attention to my roots and ends, especially when I had that striking '50/50 era' with the 'blonde + black' split – keeping both sides healthy with their different needs was definitely a balancing act! The 'MONTH 8' picture shows the beginning of that transition, and by 'YEAR 1,' when 'The blonde + black 50/50 ate down,' I felt like I really nailed the look. For anyone wondering about general loc health, regular washing with a sulfate-free shampoo is a must to prevent buildup. Don't be afraid to wash your locs! Just make sure to dry them thoroughly, either by air-drying completely or using a hooded dryer, to avoid mildew and odors. Also, protective styling, like the elegant updo I showed at 'YEAR 2,' is fantastic for reducing tension on your roots and protecting your ends from environmental stressors. My retwist schedule varies; I usually wait about 4-6 weeks to avoid over-manipulation and thinning, allowing my locs to mature naturally. Looking back at my journey, from those first 'starter locs' to trying my 'first time trying a style' at 'MONTH 10,' and all the colors in between, it's amazing to see the transformation. I genuinely loved the 'auburn' phase and the boldness of 'ginger,' but the way 'We eat up blonde' has me hooked. However, seeing that 'YEAR 1' photo of my 'blonde + black 50/50' makes me consider going back. What are your favorite ways to keep your colored locs vibrant and healthy? Do you have any go-to products or routines? Or any tips for choosing between a bold blonde and a fun half-and-half look? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences – let's chat in the comments!
