Domestic Violence Awareness Month
⚠️ Trigger Warning: This post includes details about physical and mental abuse.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 💜
This one is hard for me to write. Silence is how abuse keeps winning. I grew up in a violent home.
My dad was mentally and physically abusive. That was to me, my mom, and my brother. We believe he may have been a narcissist and possibly undiagnosed bipolar, but honestly… it’s hard to remember a lot. Sometimes, I don’t want to. I’ve seen him break things in my room just to prove control. I’ve heard words no one should ever be called. He’s hit me, my mom, our dog and even my handicapped brother. The first time I truly thought I was going to die was because of him. And yet, every time, I would step in and try to protect my mom and brother. That’s what happens in abuse. You become so used to surviving that you forget what peace feels like. The lasting effects of growing up in that kind of fear…
I don’t think there are words for it. But I do know this: You are not broken for needing healing.
And if you’re still in it, or still trying to understand it I see you. 💜
You are not crazy.
You are not too sensitive.
You’re a person who’s had to stay soft in a world that wasn’t safe.
Please don’t suffer in silence. If you or someone you love needs help, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is here:
1-800-799-SAFE (7233)
💬 I know it’s not easy to talk about this. If you’ve ever needed to protect yourself or someone you love from someone who’s supposed to love you… please know you’re not alone.
Save this for the days you need it, and send it to someone who could use a little hope. 🕯️
