Switzerland too expensive? Go here instead!

Austria - what an underrated country and a cheaper alternative to Switzerland! Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Switzerland, but Austria is much more affordable if you still want to experience the mountain village, Alps vibe that is so sought after in Switzerland. Austria is less known for this to tourists, which helps the cheaper price and the crowds! The views are amazing, the prices are cheap, and you’ll have a super unique travel experience! Get to booking and Switzerland can wait til those paychecks are a bit bigger :)

... Read moreMany of us dream of exploring the majestic Alps, with their dramatic peaks, crystalline lakes, and charming villages. Switzerland often comes to mind first, but let's be real – it can be incredibly expensive! If you're like me and looking for that stunning alpine experience without breaking the bank, let me share why Austria is an absolute game-changer. I recently discovered just how incredible and affordable it is, offering everything you love about the Alps, often with fewer crowds. When planning my trip, the 'is Austria cheaper than Switzerland' question was definitely on my mind. And the answer is a resounding YES! From accommodation to dining and activities, Austria consistently offers better value. For instance, finding an 'affordable Airbnb' with incredible mountain views, like the cozy wooden house nestled in a valley we stayed in, was surprisingly easy. You can get so much more for your money, whether it's a quaint guesthouse or a modern apartment. Transportation, while efficient, also tends to be less costly, especially if you opt for local trains or buses. We even found delicious meals at traditional Gasthäuser that were hearty and budget-friendly, unlike the eye-watering prices you sometimes see in Switzerland. The Austrian Alps themselves are truly spectacular, giving the Swiss Alps a run for their money. While you might associate specific iconic peaks with Switzerland, Austria boasts equally breathtaking landscapes. I was particularly blown away by the beauty of regions like Tyrol and Salzkammergut. Imagine 'hiking' through lush meadows with a backdrop of snow-capped peaks, discovering a serene turquoise lake, or stumbling upon a sparkling stream. The 'views' are absolutely phenomenal, perfect for any nature lover. The atmosphere feels a bit more relaxed and authentic, too. If you're wondering about specific 'austria top tourist destinations' or 'hidden gems,' beyond just general 'mountain villages,' you won't be disappointed. We absolutely fell in love with a place like 'Schruns,' which felt straight out of a postcard – traditional buildings, a flowing river, and majestic peaks all around. It genuinely captured that idyllic alpine charm I was hoping for. For those interested in 'train tours,' Austria also offers incredibly scenic routes. While perhaps not as globally famous as some Swiss routes, a journey through the Arlberg or Semmering Pass reveals stunning vistas and is a fantastic way to soak in the scenery without driving. You can easily connect between charming towns and cities, making it a viable alternative for exploring the region. So, if your 'switzerland dream destination' feels out of reach due to 'switzerland prices,' don't despair! Austria provides an equally enchanting, if not more authentic and certainly more 'affordable,' Alps escape. It’s a place where you can truly immerse yourself in mountain culture, enjoy incredible adventures, and create unforgettable memories, all without having to wait for those bigger paychecks. Trust me, you'll be glad you went!

Appenzell - I’ve only called 3 places in the world “magical” (to me of course) and Appenzell is one of them! It’s a great alternative to the more known Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. Not only are there less people, it’s much much cheaper than a lot of the more known mountain towns in Switzerland.
