Let’s Talk Co-sleeping

Now I know this can be a controversial topic but let’s please not make it one. I’m just here to share my story!

With my oldest, I was hardcore against co-sleeping. Uh uh honey 🙅🏼‍♀️ I just didn’t see that it was fit for me. Now with my second, it’s been completely different. My second is more than likely my last baby. I want to soak in all the extra cuddles I can. I breastfeed him and it’s just been way easier for me to co-sleep than to get him in and out of the bassinet/pack n play. I’ve struggled with my breastfeeding journey, with my milk supply going up and down every other week. The closeness and the constant nursing throughout the night has been able to allow me to continue breastfeeding him this long.

I tried sticking Sawyer in his crib a couple weeks ago and my anxiety skyrocketed. Something about it just didn’t sit right with me. I wasn’t ready for it. I was constantly going into his room to check on him. I was constantly checking the baby monitor. I never went to sleep until he woke up to nurse. And I ended up bringing him back into my bedroom to sleep with me. Maybe I was scared something would happen to him through the night. Maybe I have separation anxiety from him. Or maybe it’s just me being postpartum. Or maybe it’s just because he’s my last baby and I want to soak in this extra time with him. I really don’t know. But what I do know, is that I just felt that he was safer and better sleeping next to me.

Nothing beats the constant cuddles at night and at nap time. Nothing beats the bond that you and your baby share from co-sleeping. Nothing beats the instant smile in the morning you get when he wakes up and he’s so happy to see you. Nothing beats the little hand resting on your cheek because he wants to just touch you and feel you.

Co-sleeping may not be for everyone. I have personal experience with both sides of it. But co-sleeping is by far the best decision I’ve made this time around.

... Read moreCo-sleeping remains a topic of debate among parents, with many opting for it as a means to foster closeness and facilitate breastfeeding during the night. It's essential to consider both the emotional benefits, such as increased bonding and security for the baby, and the potential risks that health organizations often outline. Research suggests that co-sleeping can promote a stronger parent-child relationship, as parents can respond promptly to their baby’s needs, fostering a sense of safety and reassurance for the little one. This arrangement can also simplify nighttime feedings, making it easier for breastfeeding mothers, as they can feed their babies without leaving the comfort of their bed. However, parents should be mindful of sleep safety guidelines, ensuring that the sleep environment is free from hazards such as loose bedding, soft surfaces, or gaps where a baby could become trapped. Education around safe co-sleeping practices is crucial for those who choose this path. Ultimately, deciding whether to co-sleep involves considering what works best for a family's unique dynamics while prioritizing the safety and well-being of everyone involved.

My husband and I co-sleeped the first few months of our little guy being born. It was so lovely. It was the only way we got any sleep and made taking care of our little guy sooo much easier. Please I loved all the snuggles we got to have with him while he was falling asleep!
