... Read moreMany people might not realize the significant role Afro-Mexican history plays in understanding Mexico’s diverse cultural heritage. From my own experience researching and exploring this topic, I found it eye-opening how the African diaspora influenced the social and racial dynamics in colonial Mexico. The slave trade brought over millions of Africans to the Americas, with large numbers forcibly taken from West Africa through major routes across the South Atlantic to regions like Brazil, the Caribbean, and Mexico. One key aspect that stood out was the colonial class structure in New Spain, where Spaniards born in Spain (Peninsulares) were at the top, followed by Creoles (those born in the Americas of Spanish descent), Mestizos (mixed Spanish and Native American ancestry), Native American Indians, and enslaved persons brought over from Africa and the Caribbean. This hierarchy shaped social interactions and power dynamics, influencing Mexico’s cultural and political landscape. What fascinated me most were the stories of resistance and unity among Afro-Mexicans and indigenous peoples who, despite harsh oppression, contributed significantly to the fight for independence and social justice in the region. This shared struggle shows how Black and Brown communities joined forces to challenge colonization and slavery. Understanding these histories enriches our appreciation of Mexico’s multicultural fabric and highlights the resilience and strength of communities often overlooked in mainstream narratives. If you’re interested in history, I highly recommend diving deeper into Afro-Mexican narratives, as they provide crucial insights into broader themes of identity, migration, and the enduring impact of colonialism across the Americas.

Black & Mexican Unity is more than a social movement for me.
I have so many Mexicans in my DMs telling me to stop trying to be black and the black community will never accept me. I have so many black people telling me to keep their community out of my mouth and to leave them alone. I am one woman and I feel defeated so many times more than I feel like I

Cinco de Mayo: The Deeper Freedom Story
Cinco de Mayo is often treated like a party day, but its real history goes much deeper. The date marks the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when Mexican forces defeated French troops despite being outnumbered. It was not Mexican Independence Day. It was a military victory against French invasion

The Black Resistance Leader Who Built Freedom in Mexico
