5 NARCISSISTIC BEHAVIORS THAT MADE YOU STOP TELLING STORIES IN FRONT OF THEM
You didn't necessarily notice yourself getting quieter.
First, you left out one detail.
Then you shortened the story.
Then you started watching their face while you talked.
Eventually, there were stories you only told when they weren't in the room.
What did you stop mentioning because you already knew how it would go?

Experiencing narcissistic behaviors can deeply impact your willingness to share your thoughts and stories. I noticed that over time, I would instinctively withhold details or shorten what I said around certain people. It starts subtly—the narcissist may interrupt, dismiss, or steer the conversation back to themselves, making you feel unheard or unimportant. This often leads to self-censorship and a growing silence. One common behavior is the narcissist’s lack of genuine interest. When you tell a story, instead of engaging, they may seem distracted or impatient, prompting you to tell smaller, less meaningful parts of your experiences. Another behavior is the tendency to criticize or belittle your stories, which erodes your confidence and prompts you to avoid sharing altogether. Sometimes, narcissists use gaslighting techniques, causing you to question your own memories or feelings about events, which further discourages openness. They may also monopolize conversations, turning every story back to themselves, making your voice feel diminished. Through my personal experience, setting boundaries became essential. Recognizing these behaviors helped me protect my emotional well-being by choosing safe spaces or people for storytelling. Understanding these narcissistic traits empowers you to reclaim your voice, maintain healthy communication, and nurture relationships where your stories are genuinely valued.
