5 lessons therapy taught me

4/26 Edited to

... Read moreTherapy has profoundly changed how I understand my own mental and emotional processes. One of the biggest insights I gained is realizing that over-explaining is not just a habit but a protective response that my mind uses to feel safer in uncertain situations. This shifted how I communicated with others and helped reduce my social anxiety. Another important lesson is recognizing that anxiety can originate long before we find the words to describe it. Often, our nervous system reacts to subtle cues accumulated over time. For instance, I noticed a pattern where I’d feel exhausted in the afternoons, which therapy helped me connect to how I braced myself all morning emotionally and mentally. Being mindful of these patterns made me more compassionate towards myself. Therapy also taught me the value of grounding techniques to interrupt repetitive, distressing thoughts. Replaying conversations, I learned, isn’t about perfectly recalling details—it’s a way the brain tries to retroactively feel safe. Accepting this allowed me to let go of the need to control every memory and focus on how I felt. Social exhaustion is very real and physiological, not just something dramatic. After social events, I started recognizing my body’s genuine need to recover, which empowered me to set better boundaries and prioritize self-care without guilt. Lastly, therapy helped me disentangle people-pleasing from genuine generosity. I learned that seeking approval to feel safe is different from freely giving to others. This awareness encouraged me to drop the need for constant approval and build healthier relationships based on authenticity. From personal experience, these lessons have been transformative. They not only deepened my self-awareness but also improved how I relate to others and manage anxiety. If you're on a similar journey, embracing these insights can provide comfort and guidance through your healing process.

Same, plus my awesome therapist helped me realize so many great truths hidden deep inside me. I also have been well coached about letting go and minimizing thoughts and interactions with toxic people. At the end of the day you can only change yourself. You must accept the ups and downs of relationships in life but always hopeful and fostering happiness from within.
