Advice straight from my therapist

4/29 Edited to

... Read moreBased on my personal journey with emotional regulation, I’ve found that understanding the root of others’ hurtful reactions can truly transform how we respond to them. When someone lashes out or criticizes, it’s often a reflection of their own insecurities or fears rather than an accurate judgment of us. Recognizing this has helped me detach my identity from others’ emotional projections, reducing unnecessary stress and emotional burden. One technique that really resonates with me is allowing myself to feel emotions fully without clinging to them or letting them define me. It’s like observing the emotion as a wave that comes and goes, instead of drowning in it. Using tools such as the Groundly app, which focuses on grounding yourself back in the present moment, has been a game changer for preventing negative thoughts from spiraling out of control. Similarly, journaling with apps like Vent First Journal offers a private outlet to express emotions without judgment, which supports emotional release and clarity. The phrase "hurt people hurt people" rings incredibly true in my experience. When someone is the source of love and understanding, their kindness naturally spreads – but when they carry pain internally, it can unintentionally manifest as animosity or control. Maintaining awareness of these dynamics fosters compassion for others while empowering us to prioritize our own emotional well-being. This balance between empathy for others’ struggles and responsibility for our own emotions has been crucial in cultivating healthier relationships and inner peace.
