How growing up wanting death can shape you and an adult

7/5 Edited to

... Read moreGrowing up with thoughts of death or suicidal feelings can deeply influence how you experience adulthood in many ways. From personal experience and discussions with others who have faced similar challenges, I’ve noticed common patterns in how this early mindset shapes behaviors and emotions later in life. Firstly, envisioning a long-term future can become difficult. When survival was the primary focus during childhood, imagining optimistic goals or planning ahead often feels abstract or overwhelming. This makes it easy to stay stuck in the present moment without motivation to pursue dreams or opportunities. Another key effect is the tendency to minimize your own suffering. Having endured intense emotional pain early on, you might convince yourself that current struggles are not serious enough to ask for help, leading to isolation and untreated issues. Recognizing this mindset can be the first step toward seeking support and validation. Hyper-independence is also common. If relying solely on yourself was necessary for survival as a child, asking for help may feel risky or uncomfortable. However, learning to trust others and accept assistance can be a powerful part of healing and breaking down these protective barriers. Furthermore, pushing people away to avoid potential loss becomes a protective habit. While distancing yourself may reduce immediate pain, it can prevent the formation of meaningful, supportive relationships that are crucial for mental wellness. Finally, it is common to expect happiness to be fleeting. The brain may have adapted to anticipate disappointment or setbacks, leading to anxiety even in positive times. Mindfulness practices, therapy, or community support can help rewire these expectations and create room for sustained joy. Understanding these patterns—struggling to imagine the future, minimizing pain, hyper-independence, emotional distancing, and doubting lasting happiness—is important in addressing the wounds of a suicidal mindset developed in youth. Sharing experiences openly and seeking compassionate support can foster resilience and a more hopeful adult life.
