Chips are my favorite, go-to snack, so when I learned they had a long list of ingredients that I couldn’t even pronounce I knew something was up. I did a little bit of research and found out those words I couldn’t pronounce were CHEMICALS that are directly linked to weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease, the list goes on. They are also HIGH in FAT and CALORIES which does NOT align with my health goals.
I discovered these healthier chip options and now I KNOW what ingredients I am putting into my body. I am aware chips are still not healthy for you, BUT I am still a human who does want chips sometimes. I believe you can still enjoy the foods you love while living a healthy lifestyle✨
... Read moreAfter my eye-opening discovery about the ingredients hiding in popular chips, I realized just knowing what’s in your food is half the battle. But how do you really decipher those long, confusing ingredient lists on labels? It can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re just grabbing a bag from the store, like those familiar Doritos or Cheetos bags you often see lining the aisles!
Here’s my personal guide to becoming a label-reading pro, so you can confidently pick out truly healthier chip options. First, when you look at a nutrition label, always peek at the serving size. It’s easy to accidentally consume double the calories and fat if you don’t pay attention! Then, scan the ingredient list right away. My rule of thumb? If I can’t pronounce it or don’t recognize it as a whole food, it’s usually a red flag. Conventional chips often contain artificial flavors, artificial colors (like 'Red 40' or 'Yellow 5' which are entirely unnecessary for taste), and preservatives such as BHT or BHA, which I've learned are best avoided for overall health due to potential links to various health concerns. Hydrogenated oils, a source of unhealthy trans fats, are another big no-no to look out for, as they significantly increase saturated fat content.
Instead, I actively seek out chips made with simple, whole ingredients. Think potatoes, avocado oil, and sea salt – just like the Good Health chips I found! Avocado oil is a fantastic healthier fat compared to highly processed vegetable oils (like soybean or canola oil) often found in regular chips, offering beneficial monounsaturated fats. You'll also find great options made with olive oil or even coconut oil, though those are less common for savory chips. The shorter and more recognizable the ‘ingredients list,’ the better.
Don't limit yourself to just potato chips either! I’ve branched out to sweet potato chips, like the Jackson's brand, which adds a lovely natural sweetness and extra nutrients like Vitamin A. Grain-free tortilla chips, such as Siete's, are also excellent for dipping and offer a lighter, cleaner alternative to traditional corn chips, often made with healthier flours like cassava or almond. When I'm in the mood for something different, I also look for lentil or chickpea-based chips, which often pack more protein and fiber, making them feel more satisfying.
Remember, it’s all about balance and making informed choices. Comparing the ingredients of a widely popular brand to a 'clean' one, side-by-side (perhaps even taking a quick 'nutrition label close up' photo on your phone while shopping!), truly highlights the difference. You'll notice the 'long ingredients list' on one and a short, recognizable list on the other. It’s empowering to know you’re fueling your body with better ingredients, even when enjoying a snack. Happy snacking, everyone, and always remember to check those labels!
