Babies active sleep

Hahaha baby grunts are insane! But i love them.

Babies in active sleep may grunt, squirm, lift their legs, cry or even open their eyes.

Rushing to pick up your baby in active sleep will interrupt their rest. It took me his whole first week of life when he was born to not run to pick him up while he was in his active sleep. Now i just let him do his grunts and wriggles. He’ll settle on his own if not he’ll let me know he needs me. 🩵

... Read moreOkay, fellow parents, let's talk about those wild and wonderful baby grunts and squirming during sleep! Like many of you, I initially thought every little sound meant my newborn was waking up and needed me. It was exhausting! But through countless sleepless nights and a bit of research (and a lot of patience!), I’ve learned so much about what’s actually going on during what experts call 'active sleep.' You know how adults have REM sleep where our eyes flutter and we dream? Well, active sleep is essentially a baby’s version of that! It’s a crucial stage of sleep for their development, especially for newborns, making up about 50% of their total sleep time. During this phase, their little brains are super busy processing information and growing. This is especially true for a newborn, whether they're a tiny 2.5kg baby or a robust 8-pounder at birth – every infant experiences this vital sleep stage. Beyond the grunts and wriggles the original post mentioned, you might also notice your little one's eyelids fluttering, tiny smiles or frowns, their breathing becoming irregular (which can be scary at first, but it’s completely normal!), and even little jerks or twitches. Sometimes, they might even briefly open their eyes, looking like they're awake. Don't be fooled! Most of the time, they're still deeply asleep, just in a very active stage. It’s their body’s way of sorting things out, strengthening connections in their brain, and even practicing motor skills without fully waking up. So, when does this active sleep phase start to calm down? Typically, as babies grow, their sleep cycles mature and become more like an adult's. This often happens around 3 to 6 months of age. You'll notice they spend less time in active sleep and more in quiet, deep sleep. But every baby is different, so don't fret if your little one is still a squirmy sleeper at 4 months old; it’s a spectrum of normal infant behavior. The biggest takeaway for me, and something I wish I knew sooner, is to resist the urge to immediately pick them up. As the original post wisely noted, you'll interrupt their precious rest. It took me a while to get past that instinct! Instead, observe for a moment. Are their eyes truly open and focused? Are they making distressed cries, or just typical sleep noises? Often, they'll settle back down on their own. This is where the old adage "Sleep when baby sleeps" comes in handy, but also 'let baby sleep when baby sleeps' – don't wake them just because they're noisy! Just ensure they are in a safe sleep environment, on their back, in their crib or bassinet. Learning to distinguish between active sleep and genuine hunger or discomfort has been a game-changer for my own sanity and my baby's sleep quality. It's all part of the beautiful, messy journey of motherhood!
