Why I Drink Zero Sugar

So I know a lot of people say things like 'just drink water,' which for the most part I do.

However, I got into fitness and when I would read labels I didn't realize how much sugar a lot of the items I consumed had.

This concerned me because on my dad's side of the family my grandparents and himself both had diabetes and I remember my dad struggling through it at an early age.

I wanted to prevent potentially developing diabetes since it's in my genes by switching to a different alternative.

I know zero sugar is controversial or sometimes frowned upon but I have my reasons other than 'trying to look good.' :)

oh bruther if you just sit here and yap about how it's bad for you don't even bother. like this has helped a lot of people when it comes to a lowering sugar problem. y'all are under the assumption I consume this every day...like no I consume this once in a blue moon when I want soda. I grew up not drinking soda in my house so I'm not addicted but when I go out this is my go to.

... Read moreIt's totally understandable to be curious about what's actually in our drinks, especially when it comes to sugar! I mean, who hasn't picked up a soda and wondered just how much sweetness is packed into that can? When I first started really looking at nutrition labels, I was genuinely shocked by the sugar content in some of my go-to beverages. A single can of a regular cola, for instance, can easily contain upwards of 39 grams of sugar – that's almost 10 teaspoons! Thinking about that, especially when the daily recommended sugar intake is much lower, really puts things into perspective. For those of us trying to cut back, or even just be more mindful, zero-sugar options can feel like a lifesaver. You might be wondering, 'Are these 'jugos zero sugar' or 'zero sugar sodas' truly a better alternative?' It's a great question, and one I've grappled with myself. These drinks typically use artificial sweeteners or natural sugar substitutes to give you that sweet taste without the added calories or glycemic impact of sugar. Common ones you'll spot on labels include sucralose, aspartame, stevia, or erythritol. While there's ongoing discussion about the long-term effects of artificial sweeteners (and it's always good to do your own research and consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns), for many, they offer a way to enjoy a treat without the sugar overload. I've found that having these options means I'm less likely to reach for a full-sugar drink, which helps me stay on track with my personal health goals. I've personally enjoyed trying out different zero-sugar versions of popular drinks – sometimes it's those refreshing Raspberry Rose sodas, or for a post-workout pick-me-up, a Gatorade Zero Berry, and I even keep a Red Bull Zero Pink Edition on hand for those days I need an extra boost without the sugar crash. The key for me has been finding alternatives that genuinely satisfy. It’s not just about swapping one sugary habit for another, but about making conscious choices. Beyond just sodas, there's a whole world of low-sugar and zero-sugar beverages out there. Think about sparkling water with a squeeze of fresh lime or a few berries, unsweetened iced tea, or even infusing water with cucumber and mint for a refreshing twist. Reading labels is your superpower here – always check the 'Nutrition Facts' panel. Look for the 'Sugars' line, and if you want to understand the added sugars, some labels now even break that down specifically. Ultimately, choosing zero-sugar drinks is a personal journey, and it's about what works best for your body and your lifestyle. For me, they've been a valuable tool in managing my sugar intake and supporting my overall health, especially given my family's history with diabetes. It's empowering to know I have choices that align with my well-being without feeling like I'm completely depriving myself of those occasional satisfying sips. Experiment a little, see what you like, and remember, moderation is always key!

I recently went on a lifestyle change, I am down 30 lbs and I cannot tell you how often I hear the “diet is bad for you” but NO ONE was chastising me when I was chugging 2-3 full sugar mountain dews a day. Or getting a 32 oz dr.pepper. Sure diet isn’t “great” but neither is high fructose corn syrup and 46 grams of carbs 3x a day
