The Weight Of Forever Book 1 (fixed 5/21)
CHAPTER ONE — “The Quiet After the Celebration”
The house still smelled like roses and vanilla cake.
Nia stood barefoot in the middle of the living room, her wedding dress draped over the back of the couch like it was still catching its breath. The reception had ended hours ago, but her body still hummed with the rhythm of slow dances, laughter, and the weight of every “Congratulations!” whispered into her ear.
She wasn’t tired.
She was full.
Full of love.
Full of hope.
Full of the kind of peace she hadn’t felt in years.
Zaire walked in behind her, loosening his tie, his jacket already tossed somewhere she’d fuss about in the morning. He looked at her like she was the only light in the room.
“Mrs. Carter,” he said, voice low, warm, teasing.
She turned slowly, letting the name settle on her skin. “Say it again.”
He stepped closer, sliding his hands around her waist. “Mrs. Carter.”
She melted into him, the way she always did. His cologne mixed with the faint scent of champagne on his breath, and for a moment, the world felt impossibly soft.
“You ready for this?” he asked.
“Ready for what?”
“This life. With me. All of it.”
She smiled. “I married you, didn’t I?”
She thought about the guest list. His parents in the second row, strangers to her until today. She'd asked to meet them before the wedding. He'd always said "soon." Soon never came.
He kissed her forehead, but there was something behind his eyes — something she couldn’t name yet. A shadow. A worry. A thought he wasn’t ready to share.
She noticed it.
She filed it away.
She didn’t push.
Not tonight.
Instead, she took his hand and led him to the couch. They sat close, legs touching, fingers intertwined. The house was quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator and the soft thump of her heart against her ribs.
“Zaire?” she whispered.
“Yeah?”
“Promise me something.”
He looked at her fully now, the seriousness in her tone pulling him in. “Anything.”
“Promise me we’ll talk. Even when it’s hard. Even when we don’t want to.”
He hesitated — just for a breath — then nodded. “I promise.”
She believed him.
She shouldn’t have.
But that truth wouldn’t come until later.
For now, they curled into each other, the glow of the wedding still warm around them, unaware that the vows they spoke hours ago would be tested sooner than either of them imagined.
Outside, the street was quiet.
Inside, their new life began — soft, hopeful, fragile.
And somewhere in the back of Zaire’s mind, the secret he carried pressed against his ribs like a bruise.
