European city getaway if you’re young and broke

This is👇

📍Tirana, Albania 🇦🇱

As the capital of Albania, I found Tirana to be the most affordable city I’ve ever visited. It has a really nice vibe, the friendliest locals and best hospitality I’ve ever experienced.

Also, if you’d like to visit nearby cities, I found a 3 hour bus ride for only 20€ (about $21) on Bookaway from Tirana to Bar, Montenegro. So that just gives you an idea of how inexpensive it is!

✈️ Airport transfer to the city center was only 5€.

🚌 the local public transport bus is only .50¢ per ride.

🚕 I would avoid taking a cab because they might overcharge you.

Bring cash! 💵

... Read moreWhen I first started planning my European adventure on a shoestring budget, I honestly thought I'd be limited to just a few expensive cities. But then I stumbled upon Tirana, Albania, and it completely changed my perspective on what's possible for a young, broke traveler! I can genuinely say it's the most affordable city I've ever visited, and I want to share exactly how I made my money stretch so far here. First off, let's talk about where to stay. Accommodation can often be the biggest budget killer, but not in Tirana. I stayed at a fantastic spot like Hostel Albania, where a bunk bed in a clean, vibrant room cost me an unbelievable $12 USD a night! You read that right. This meant I had so much more cash left over for experiences rather than just a place to sleep. Many hostels offer shared kitchens too, which brings me to my next point. Eating out in Tirana is incredibly budget-friendly, but you can save even more if you're smart about it. While I loved treating myself to a delicious dinner at a lovely spot like Millennium Garden for about $13 USD – which felt like a steal for the quality and ambiance – I also balanced it with cheaper options. Street food is a must-try; you can grab a 'byrek' or a 'qofte' for just a few dollars. And coffee culture here is huge! I frequently popped into charming cafes like Kafe Muzeum for a great cup of coffee that only set me back around $2 USD. For evenings out, I found a glass of local white wine at a delightful place like Oda Garden for about $4 USD. Comparing these prices to Western European capitals, it's truly astounding. Getting around Tirana is another area where your wallet will thank you. As mentioned, the local public transport buses are just 50 cents a ride, making it incredibly easy to navigate the city. And for arrival, the airport transfer to the city center was only €5. I made sure to avoid taxis unless absolutely necessary, as they can definitely overcharge tourists. Honestly, Tirana is also a very walkable city, especially the central areas, so just strolling around and soaking in the atmosphere is a free activity in itself! And speaking of free activities, Tirana has plenty to offer. One of my favorite finds was the Pyramid of Tirana, which offers an amazing view of the city – completely free! I spent hours just exploring the Bunk'Art museums (which do have an entry fee but are well worth it for the history), wandering through the Blloku district, and simply enjoying the vibrant street art. I also made sure to bring enough cash with me, as some smaller establishments prefer it, and it helps you stay on track with your budget. Interacting with the incredibly friendly locals also enriched my trip without costing a thing; they were always happy to give recommendations or just chat. So, if you're like me – young, budget-conscious, and dreaming of an unforgettable European adventure – Tirana, Albania, should absolutely be at the top of your list for 2023. It’s not just affordable; it’s rich in culture, hospitality, and genuinely offers incredible value for every dollar or euro you spend.
