RA Triggers in My Hands and Feet

If you have rheumatoid arthritis you know that identifying your triggers is a big deal. For me, I tend to see it most in my hands and as time goes on, my feet.

My number one trigger, hands down, (no pun intended) is alcohol. Even if I don't drink enough to get a hang over, my knuckles ACHE the next day. I suspect its a combo of dehydration and inflammation caused by the alcohol and bad sleep.

My other triggers are temperatures bettween 40-55, handwriting, and carrying heavy shopping bags. The mid range temperature one is weird. If it's just a little chilly out my hands ache. Handwriting is actually how I discovered the RA. I was explaining what was going on to my doc and I told her writing cripples me. She said this wasnt normal. And the heavy bags cause my hands to flare when they have those skinny straps that dig into my knuckles.

For my feet it's been more recent, but my biggest trigger is walking in narrow shoes. I never used to have foot pain and have really strong feet from exercising barefoot and wearing minimal footwear. But now if I have shoes that squeeze my toes I get that deep RA ache for days. Another huge one is standing barefoot in one place for hours. If I cook for a few hours I'll definitely pay for it the next day. And finally trauma flares things in my entire body. Just a small bump and I can end up dealing with tendonitis for months. Something like stubbing my toe can mean weeks of pain.

Do you also suffer from RA? What causes your flares and what are you doing to deal with them?

... Read moreIt's incredible how many different ways Rheumatoid Arthritis can manifest, isn't it? Reading about Emma's specific triggers in her hands and feet really resonated with me, especially the impact of daily activities and even seemingly small things like carrying heavy grocery bags. Those skinny straps really are the worst for hands already dealing with RA! Beyond these common joint pains, I've also found that managing RA extends to other areas of our bodies, and understanding these broader symptoms can be a game-changer. One area I've heard many in the RA community discuss, and something I've learned to watch for, are rheumatoid arthritis rash symptoms. While Emma's article focuses on joint pain, it's worth noting that RA can sometimes affect the skin. These RA rashes aren't always present, but when they appear, they can be quite varied. For instance, some people experience rheumatoid nodules, which are firm lumps usually found near joints, but sometimes other skin manifestations can occur. Others might notice a more diffuse face rash or even localized patches, perhaps a top of foot rash. It’s crucial to remember that a viral arthritis rash is a separate condition, often acute and linked to an infection, whereas RA-related skin issues are part of the chronic autoimmune process. If you ever see an unusual rash and have rheumatoid arthritis, definitely bring it up with your rheumatologist. It's always best to get a professional opinion to understand what's going on. Emma also touched on dehydration and temperature sensitivity, and I can totally relate to cold feet being a real struggle. My own experience has shown me how vital staying hydrated is for managing inflammation. When I'm feeling even slightly dehydrated, my joints feel stiffer, and my overall discomfort increases. And those cold feet? They can sometimes feel like a symptom of poor blood circulation symptoms in legs, which can unfortunately be a concern for some with RA due to inflammation potentially affecting blood vessels. I've found warming socks, gentle leg exercises, and keeping active (without overdoing it!) can sometimes help. It's all about finding what works for your body to encourage better blood flow and keep those aches at bay. For anyone who feels like they're deciding how to best manage their RA, whether newly diagnosed or just looking for new strategies, connecting with others who understand is so powerful. Identifying your personal RA triggers in your hands and feet – like alcohol, specific temperatures, or even the strain from handwriting or walking in narrow toe box shoes – is a fantastic first step, just like Emma did. But also consider the broader picture: your diet, stress levels, sleep quality, and how you adapt daily tasks to minimize strain. For instance, when it comes to standing barefoot for hours while cooking, perhaps a soft mat can make a huge difference. And if trauma like stubbing a toe can cause a flare, then gentle movement and protecting your joints become even more important. It's a journey of continuous learning and adaptation, and every little bit of shared wisdom helps.
