Genetic testing has become a focal point of this issue; while it offers valuable medical insights, it can unintentionally perpetuate discrimination and societal biases. The framing of genetic conditions as "defective" further entrenches ableist attitudes, suggesting that a child's value is contingent upon their physical and cognitive attributes. Moreover, the history of eugenics looms over these discussions, as prenatal screenings can evoke harmful historical implications that devalue the lives of people with disabilities. Ethical guidelines must guide the use of such technologies to ensure that the choices presented to parents are informed and free from societal biases. Parents should be supported regardless of the outcomes of genetic testing, fostering an environment where inclusivity and respect for all lives are paramount. In order to combat these ableist structures, we must advocate for a culture that values diversity in abilities and challenges the prevailing narrative that equates worth with health. Encouraging open discussions about disability and creating resources to aid families in embracing children regardless of their abilities can lead to a more equitable society.
