Most workplace problems aren't surprises.

Employees mention them.

Teams talk about them.

Managers hear about them.

The question is whether anyone takes them seriously before good people decide they're done.

Sometimes the most uncomfortable workplace truths are also the most obvious.

The signs are usually there long before the resignation letter.

... Read moreFrom personal experience managing teams, I've seen firsthand how employees often share their frustrations well before they actually leave. These complaints might be subtle or indirect, but they carry significant warning signs. For example, micromanagement usually signals a deeper issue of trust between managers and employees, which, if not addressed, can push even high performers to disengage. I've learned that offering a raise only after a resignation rarely resolves the underlying problems; by then, retention efforts are often too late. One critical lesson is that managers must focus on emotional intelligence — people remember how they were made to feel long after they've forgotten the specifics of any conversation. Building trust and showing genuine care can make a big difference in employee satisfaction and loyalty. Also, it's common that top performers are overloaded with work that should be distributed, leading to burnout. By proactively listening to feedback, having honest conversations, and acting on concerns early, leaders can transform workplace culture and reduce turnover. Instead of waiting for resignation letters, creating an environment where employees feel heard and valued is key to sustained success.

All true. Manager need to take the temperature of their workplace regularly. I recommend a WP journal. Focus on how they are working/feeling. Notice cliques, bullies, introverts etc. Is the atmosphere hostile? And is it your management style or something else that is driving it. When you identify the problem areas, you can then start changing the atmosphere for the better. Loyal, happy employees don’t leave
