... Read moreFrom my experience working in different teams, I've noticed that psychological safety isn't something that can be created overnight. It's built gradually based on everyday interactions. When someone raises a concern or points out a mistake, the reactions they receive shape how safe others feel about speaking up later. For example, if the person is met with defensiveness or labeled as difficult, it sends a clear signal that honesty may come with consequences. This ongoing observation means that by the time leadership conducts anonymous feedback surveys, employees have already formed strong opinions about the safety of being open. It's not a decision made in the moment but one influenced by months of previous treatment. To foster genuine psychological safety, leaders need to consistently respond to feedback — both positive and negative — with empathy and a non-judgmental attitude. Teams that encourage mistakes as learning opportunities and appreciate constructive disagreement tend to experience greater employee engagement and innovation. Incorporating these insights has helped me contribute more openly to team discussions and trust that my honest input is valued rather than penalized. Psychology safety truly transforms the employee experience by making workplaces cultures more supportive, transparent, and responsive to change.
