Some workplace behaviors become so normalized that people stop recognizing how unhealthy they actually are.

Not everything should feel exhausting just because it’s “professional.” 🌺

A lot of employees are adapting to environments that reward visibility, overwork, and emotional suppression more than sustainable performance.

And eventually, people stop asking:

“Is this productive?”

And start asking:

“Does this look productive?”

That shift changes workplace culture more than most organizations realize. 🌸

... Read moreIn many workplaces today, a troubling shift has occurred where appearances take precedence over actual productivity. From my experience, this often manifests in employees staying late just to avoid the stigma of leaving on time, even if their work is done. This culture of pretending to be busy can lead to exhaustion that is mistakenly seen as dedication, which paradoxically reduces overall effectiveness. I've noticed that these norms not only harm individuals but also affect team dynamics. When people feel safer staying silent rather than asking questions, innovation and problem-solving suffer. Emotional suppression becomes a barrier to genuine communication, leading to increased stress and burnout. Another common issue is managers rewarding visible effort rather than tangible results. This focus on 'looking productive' promotes unhealthy practices like unnecessary meetings or multitasking without real progress. It also fosters guilt among employees for using their earned paid time off, which should be respected as essential for mental health and long-term performance. Valuing sustainable performance means creating an environment where people can focus on meaningful work without the need to perform productivity theatrics. Encouraging openness, realistic expectations, and recognition based on outcomes rather than optics can lead to a healthier, more engaged workforce. In my own workplace, promoting a culture where asking questions is welcomed and leaving on time is normalized has enhanced both morale and output. It reminds me that a truly productive workplace respects both humanity and results, rejecting outdated norms that blur the lines between dedication and burnout.
