Living with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and its many comorbidities can be an incredibly challenging journey, especially when diagnosis comes late, as it did for me in my early 30s. From personal experience, the road to understanding this connective tissue disorder is filled with frustration, pain, and often a sense of not being believed by medical professionals. Many patients face what’s called medical gaslighting, where symptoms are dismissed as normal growing pains or psychological issues, delaying proper care and treatment. One of the most difficult aspects of hEDS is the wide range of symptoms that can manifest, such as chronic pain, easily triggered reactions, autonomic nervous system dysfunctions, and even vocal cord dysfunction that can mimic asthma. Recognizing that symptoms like frequent vomiting, rapid heartbeat, sciatica, and insomnia are not normal is crucial. These signs often indicate underlying systemic issues that require serious attention. Sharing my story and writing a letter to my younger self helped me process the trauma of being misunderstood and untreated for so many years. To anyone experiencing persistent, unexplained symptoms—whether you are 15 or 50—know that you deserve answers and compassionate care. Advocacy, persistence, and finding healthcare providers familiar with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome are key steps toward relief. Living with hEDS also means learning to manage lifestyle changes and pacing activities to avoid exacerbating symptoms.
