3 Types of Runs for Marathon Training!

Training for a marathon (26.2 miles!) is a rewarding process that requires dedication, discipline, and consistency. I’ve been running marathons for more than 20 years. Here are some different types of runs that I do to prepare. They will improve your endurance, speed, strength, and recovery.

1️⃣ Long: These are the most important runs for marathon training, as they help you build your aerobic capacity and stamina. Long runs also teach you how to pace yourself and deal with fatigue. You should do one long run per week, gradually increasing your distance until you reach 18 to 20 miles.

2️⃣ Speed: These are runs that involve running faster than your normal pace for short or long intervals, with recovery periods in between. Speed runs help you improve your running economy, power, and confidence. They also train your body to use different energy systems and cope with lactic acid buildup. You should do one or two speed runs per week, varying the intensity, duration, and frequency of the intervals.

3️⃣ Recovery: These are easy runs that you do on the days after a hard workout or a long run. Recovery runs help you loosen up your muscles, flush out toxins, and promote blood flow. They also allow you to maintain your weekly mileage without overloading your body.

These are some of the types of runs you should do during marathon training. Most runs should be done at a comfortable pace, 80% of mine are comfortable and 20% on the faster side. Remember to listen to your body, adjust your pace and distance according to your goals and fitness level, and enjoy the journey! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

... Read moreEmbarking on a marathon journey can feel like a monumental task, but trust me, it's incredibly rewarding! If you're wondering how to take that first step or optimize your long-distance running, I've gathered some additional insights from my own years of experience. Before You Start: The Essential Warm-Up Many runners, myself included early on, often skip a proper warm-up. But a dynamic pre-run routine is crucial for long-distance running, setting your body up for success and preventing injuries. Before a run, especially a longer one, I always do 5-10 minutes of dynamic stretches like leg swings, butt kicks, high knees, and walking lunges. This increases blood flow to your muscles, improves flexibility, and prepares your joints for the impact ahead. Think of it as gently waking up your body, not forcing it. Finding Your Pace: A Marathon is a Journey, Not a Sprint Understanding your long-distance running pace is key to avoiding burnout and sustaining your effort. For most of your runs, especially those long ones, you should be able to hold a conversation. This 'conversational pace' ensures you're building your aerobic base without overdoing it. I often use a GPS watch to monitor my pace, but listening to your body and your breath is just as important. Don't compare your pace to others; focus on what feels right for your body on that particular day. For speed runs or interval training, you'll naturally push harder, but always ensure your body is ready for the intensity. Beyond the Run: Optimal Recovery and Nutrition While recovery runs are vital, what you do off the track is equally important. After a challenging long run or speed session, refueling your body correctly makes a huge difference. I aim to consume a mix of carbohydrates and protein within 30-60 minutes post-run to replenish glycogen stores and repair muscle tissue. Think a banana with peanut butter, a protein shake, or a recovery meal. Proper hydration throughout the day, not just during your run, is also non-negotiable. And remember what the image overlay advises: it's totally okay to take rest days! In fact, they're essential for muscle repair and preventing overtraining. If you miss a run or two, don't beat yourself up; just pick it back up when you can. Consistency over perfection is my motto! The Power of Community and Mindset Running can be a solitary sport, but connecting with a running community can be incredibly motivating. Whether it's a local running club, online forums, or even just a running buddy, sharing experiences and tips can provide invaluable support. I've found that having a community helps with accountability and makes the journey much more enjoyable. It's also a great way to learn new outdoor running interval training techniques or get advice on specific training plans. Ultimately, marathon training is as much a mental game as it is physical. Enjoy the journey, celebrate the small victories, and trust in your body's incredible ability to adapt and grow stronger.
