The beginner’s guide to retinol

Retinol is a great anti aging ingredient that you should definitely add to your routine when you get into your mid 20s. Slowly adding this into your nightly routine will benefit your skin.

My beginner guide:

- 1st step: barrier serum, using this will help nourish and protect your skin in case the retinol is too strong.

- 2nd step: a retinol, use one that isn’t super strong or has other good ingredients like ceramides. Make sure to test a patch of skin the day before applying it everywhere.

- last step: use a very hydrating and nourishing moisturizer.

Do you use retinol? Let me know if you try out this routine!

... Read moreStarting to incorporate retinol into your skincare can be a game-changer, especially when you enter your mid-20s and want to maintain youthful skin. Based on my experience, the key to success is to be gentle and patient with your skin. One of the best ways I found to reduce irritation is beginning with a barrier serum rich in lipids, vitamins, and phytotechnologies that repair and protect the skin’s epidermis. Brands like The Ordinary’s soothing and barrier support serums offer great options that complement retinol use. This step is essential because retinol can sometimes cause redness, dryness, or peeling if the skin barrier is compromised. Next, choosing a retinol product with added ceramides and peptides makes a significant difference. These ingredients help calm the skin and support firmness, while promoting steady skin turnover. For beginners, I found daily micro-dose serums with a mild concentration of retinol to be effective and less harsh. Always patch test before applying extensively, as this reduces the risk of adverse reactions. Finally, layering a rich, hydrating moisturizer is crucial. I love using creams that incorporate elements like triple-ceramide blends and nourishing oils which help lock in moisture and soothe the skin after retinol application. This step keeps the skin from feeling tight or stripped, helping it recover overnight. In my routine, applying retinol only at night and gradually increasing frequency helped my skin adjust without irritation. Remember, consistency and protection go hand in hand; always use sunscreen during the day since retinol can increase sun sensitivity. By following these steps—barrier serum, gentle retinol with skin-loving ingredients, and a nourishing moisturizer—you can successfully introduce retinol into your routine and enjoy its anti-aging benefits without discomfort. If you’re new to retinol, this beginner-friendly approach is worth trying for smoother, firmer, and more radiant skin.
