ADHD and periods???

There is still SO MUCH research that needs to be done to learn more about this correlation. It is an area that does not have a surplus of research yet but slowly it is gaining traction for this incredibly important area.

... Read moreMany women with ADHD notice changes in their symptoms that seem to align with their menstrual cycles. This connection is believed to be influenced largely by fluctuations in estrogen and other reproductive hormones throughout the cycle. Estrogen, for example, has a significant impact on executive function — the set of mental skills including working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control which are commonly affected in ADHD. Research suggests that ADHD symptoms may become more pronounced when estrogen levels drop rapidly, such as at the beginning of the follicular phase (around the onset of menstruation) and just before the luteal phase ends (right before the period starts). These hormonal shifts can lead to increased challenges with attention, impulsivity, and emotional regulation during these times. However, the current body of research on how menstrual cycles affect ADHD is still limited and more studies are needed to better understand this complex relationship. In addition to estrogen, other hormones like progesterone and fluctuations in neurotransmitters like dopamine also play a role in cognitive and emotional changes throughout the cycle. This might help explain why some women report stronger ADHD symptoms at certain points of their period. For women managing ADHD, awareness of this cyclical pattern can be empowering. Tracking symptom changes alongside the menstrual cycle can provide insights that help with personalizing treatment plans and behavioral strategies. Healthcare providers might consider hormone levels and menstrual cycles when evaluating symptom patterns and medication timing. Ultimately, the link between ADHD and periods is an important area gaining more attention. Understanding how hormonal changes impact ADHD symptoms could lead to better support, tailored treatments, and improved quality of life for women living with ADHD.

I find my ADHD is very difficult to live with (not all the time). But I guess with all the body changes during the period I can see how it would impact and make it more difficult or even better for some people throughout their cycles
