soft functioning is still functioning

5/14 Edited to

... Read moreLiving with ADHD, burnout, or mental health struggles often means redefining productivity. I've personally found that embracing a 'soft functioning' mindset—where rest and gentle pacing are not only allowed but encouraged—has been transformative. It takes the pressure off the idea that you must always be operating at full capacity to be considered successful. Soft functioning means acknowledging that progress isn't always linear or intense. On days when motivation runs low, or if mental fatigue sets in, giving yourself permission to rest can recharge your energy and mental clarity. For example, after periods of overextending myself, I noticed that allowing myself a day of rest often led to better focus and creativity afterward. This approach aligns well with the 'soft life' philosophy, encouraging kindness toward oneself rather than relentless push. Mental health is deeply connected with how we pace our lives. Burnout often happens when we ignore these signs and continue to force productivity without rest. Soft functioning advocates for balance—valuing small steps and frequent pauses as vital components of overall progress. Sharing this perspective has also helped me connect with others facing similar challenges, reinforcing that rest is not a sign of weakness but a strategic part of resilience and recovery. The hashtag communities such as #adhd, #softlife, #burnout, and #mentalhealth offer supportive spaces to explore these ideas further and find personal strategies that work.
