Attachment / Potential

You didn’t fall for them.

You fell for the potential.

And that’s what makes it so hard to let go.

Because potential feels real.

It feels convincing.

It gives you something to hold onto—even when reality isn’t giving you much at all.

You start attaching to:

the version of them you saw in the beginning

the moments where it felt right

the idea of what it could become

And your mind fills in the gaps.

You justify things you normally wouldn’t.

You overlook inconsistencies.

You tell yourself “they just need time”

or “it’ll get better”

Not because you’re naive—

but because you’re hopeful.

And hope can keep you attached longer than reality ever could.

But here’s the shift:

Potential doesn’t build relationships.

Consistency does.

Reality does.

Effort that shows up repeatedly—not occasionally.

The longer you hold onto who someone could be,

the longer you disconnect from who they’re actually showing you they are.

And that’s where the confusion comes from.

Letting go doesn’t get easier because they change.

It gets easier when you stop negotiating with reality

and start accepting it.

That’s where clarity comes in.

And clarity is what finally sets you free.

... Read moreIt’s natural to fall for the idea of someone’s potential rather than who they truly are in the present. From personal experience, I’ve realized that holding on to the “could be” version of a person often leads to emotional confusion and prolonged attachment that delays healing. When you focus on moments where things felt right or small efforts they made, it’s easy to convince yourself that with time, everything will improve. But hope alone rarely changes inconsistent behavior or unmet needs. What ultimately helped me was shifting my mindset from hoping for change to accepting reality. Being honest with myself about the inconsistencies I overlooked and the gaps I filled with justifications was tough but necessary for clarity. I found that consistency—seeing effort and respect demonstrated repeatedly—was the true foundation of a solid relationship, not fleeting promises or potential. Detaching from potential also means accepting that people grow at their own pace and some may never meet the expectations we set based on our hopes. This acceptance isn’t defeat; it’s empowerment. It allowed me to stop negotiating with an elusive ideal and instead focus on what was actually present, which brought peace. If you’re holding on to someone’s potential, consider journaling the differences between your expectations and reality. Notice how much energy you spend wishing for changes that haven’t occurred. Through that, you might find clarity, helping you move forward with self-respect and openness to relationships where effort and reality align. Remember, letting go isn’t about giving up on possibilities but freeing yourself from unrealistic attachments that hold you back.

This is so real because sometimes it’s not the person, it’s the idea of who you hoped they would be. Letting go of that can be hard but necessary.
