Healing is like an onion (hear me out) 🧅

Chi Wellness
2025/9/4 Edited to

... Read moreI've often found myself wondering, 'How do I truly heal from past hurts?' It feels like an endless cycle sometimes, doesn't it? That's why the 'healing is like an onion' metaphor really resonated with me, especially when I started exploring shadow work. It’s not just a cute saying; it’s a profound way to understand our journey, particularly how we deal with trauma. Imagine an onion: it has many layers. When we start our healing journey, we often tackle the outermost, most obvious layers – perhaps recent stresses, surface-level anxieties, or reactions to current events. These are the issues that are easiest to see and acknowledge. But beneath those, there are deeper, older layers of pain, conditioning, and unspoken hurt. Shadow work, for me, has been the key to gently, and sometimes painstakingly, peeling back these layers. It’s about diving into those parts of ourselves we've pushed away, the 'shadows' we'd rather not confront, but which quietly influence our entire LIFE. One of the most striking aspects of this onion metaphor is the idea that our earliest, most fundamental traumas often emerge last. At first, this confused me. Shouldn't we deal with the oldest stuff first? But I’ve learned that our psyche has incredible protection mechanisms. When we experience early trauma, especially as children, our minds build thick, protective layers around those core wounds. We develop coping strategies, beliefs, and behaviors that help us survive. These become the outer layers of the onion. As we heal and strengthen our emotional resilience by working through the more superficial layers, we gradually build the capacity to safely approach those really deep, vulnerable core wounds. It’s like our inner self waits until it feels strong enough to truly face what’s at the very heart of the onion. So, how do we actually 'peel the onion' through shadow work? I've found a few things incredibly helpful. Firstly, patience and self-compassion are vital. This isn’t a race. Each layer needs to be acknowledged and processed without judgment. Journaling has become my go-to tool; it helps me bring those subconscious thoughts and feelings to the surface. Sometimes, a specific emotion or a recurring pattern will surface, and I'll realize, 'Ah, this feels like a new layer.' That’s my cue to explore it more deeply, perhaps through guided meditations or even discussing it with a trusted therapist. I also make sure to practice grounding techniques, like deep breathing or spending time in nature, after these sessions. It helps me integrate what I've uncovered and #feelgrounded again. Remember, the goal isn't to rush to the core, but to honor each layer as it reveals itself, trusting that you’re moving towards deeper healing and a more integrated self.
