my therapist was annoying but right 👇

i wanted my therapist to give me normal advice. instead she kept giving me things that sounded way too weird to work, which honestly made me trust them less at first.

i tried deep breathing, walks, and telling myself i was fine. they were okay when my anxiety was small. when it was loud, they felt like putting a sticker on a fire alarm.

i was googling "how to stop panic before it gets worse" and "weird anxiety hacks that actually work" because i needed something my body could feel, not another thought to memorize.

what finally clicked was that panic is not polite. it hits the body first, then the brain starts explaining it. if i only argued with the explanation, i never touched the alarm.

if i was panicking, breathing felt like too much pressure. if i was restless, journaling made me sit inside the feeling. if i was embarrassed, talking to a friend made me perform being okay. the real problem was needing a body-first reset.

my therapist kept saying regulation is not about forcing calm. it is about giving your body enough safety to stop choosing for you.

now the weird tools do not feel so weird. they feel like tiny exits i actually remember when anxiety gets loud.

start building a grounding ritual before the next spike hits. you do not need perfect calm, you need enough relief to choose your next move.

if you need the rituals and apps i actually use, comment "PANIC" below. and look at my profile for more like this.

... Read moreWhen dealing with anxiety, I've found that traditional advice like deep breathing isn't always enough—especially when panic feels overwhelming. Incorporating somatic and grounding techniques can be a game-changer. One method I use is the 'sour candy reset': popping something sour in my mouth redirects my brain’s focus away from the anxiety, creating an immediate sensory distraction. Surprisingly, this simple act makes panic less consuming. Another technique called the 'butterfly tap', where you cross your arms and tap your shoulders alternately, provides a calming sensory input that helps interrupt the body's panic signals. Though it feels odd at first, it effectively shifts my nervous system out of a heightened state. Humming a long note until breath runs out might feel embarrassing, but it creates vibrations signaling to your body that you’re safe, calming the nervous system. This physical sensation serves as a powerful anchor when anxious thoughts swirl. I’ve also found ‘‘worry appointments’’ to be liberating. Setting aside a specific time later to think about worries defers anxious thoughts that tend to intrude constantly. Oddly enough, many worries fail to show up at their 'appointment,' reducing overall distress. Finally, my therapist emphasized the importance of ‘moving panic through your body.’ Instead of arguing mentally with anxiety, using tools like grounding apps to guide somatic resets helps me physically discharge panic and regain control. These ‘weird’ tricks might sound unusual but grounding your body first is essential for regulating anxiety. They help create enough safety to let your brain stop reacting in panic and allow you to choose your next steps calmly. Building a personal ritual with these techniques before anxiety spikes can bring you relief when you need it most.
