Improving 4 Executive Function skills

As someone with ADHD, my executive functioning is not always the best. I used to lose track of time, I could never find anything, I was struggling to figure out how to do things, and I struggled to control my impulses. This past year I have been identifying where my weaknesses are and working to develop them. I look forward to continuing this practice in 2024.

Time management involves the ability to plan, organize, and effectively allocate time to tasks and activities I’m improve my it by using timers and tracking my activities throughout the day to identify where I would like to be more efficient

Organization involves arranging and structuring information, tasks, and physical surroundings in a systematic and efficient manner. I’m improving it by finding a planner system that gives me structure and allows me to refer back to information that I may need.

Problem solving is identifying challenges, analyzing situations, and developing effective strategies to overcome obstacles. I’m improving it by practicing lateral thinking which involves thinking in new and unusual ways.

Impulse control is the ability to pause, consider consequences, and regulate one's behavior, emotions, or actions based on long-term goals and societal norms. I’m improving it by Improving my sleep in both quality and length helps with cognitive function so that I can make more thoughtful decisions.

... Read moreHey everyone! Diving deeper into executive functions, especially when you have ADHD, can feel like navigating a maze. I know firsthand how frustrating it can be when your brain just won't cooperate with tasks that seem so simple for others. That feeling of 'executive dysfunction' is real, and it’s basically when your brain struggles with the skills needed to manage yourself and achieve goals. For me, it manifests in ways like losing track of time, a perpetually messy space, feeling stuck on simple decisions, and sometimes acting without thinking. Let's break down these four key areas a bit more, and I'll share some extra insights beyond what I initially mentioned. Time Management: This isn't just about knowing what time it is, but about accurately estimating how long tasks will take, prioritizing, and switching between activities smoothly. For ADHD brains, 'time blindness' is a common struggle. Beyond using timers, I've found it super helpful to visually map out my day. I use color-coded blocks in my digital calendar, not just for appointments but for specific tasks. And sometimes, literally telling myself out loud, "This task will take 30 minutes, and then I'll switch," helps anchor me. It's about building a mental framework where one might not naturally exist. Organization: Oh, the endless battle against clutter and forgotten documents! For us, it’s not just about neatness; it’s about creating a system where information is accessible and findable when our working memory decides to take a vacation. My planner system isn't just for scheduling; it has dedicated sections for project breakdowns, random ideas (so they don't get lost!), and even 'brain dump' pages. Physically labeling everything in my home and office, and having a 'home' for every item, has been a game-changer. It reduces the mental load of trying to remember where things are. Problem Solving: This is where that 'lateral thinking' really shines. When your brain is wired differently, sometimes the direct path just doesn't work. Instead of hitting a wall, I've learned to step back and ask, "What's the weirdest way I could approach this?" Or "What would someone completely unrelated to this problem do?" Brainstorming with a friend, even if they don't have the answer, can also spark new ideas. It's about deliberately shifting perspective when the obvious solution isn't appearing. Impulse Control: This one is tough because it ties into so many aspects of ADHD, from interrupting conversations to making spontaneous purchases. Improving sleep quality, as I mentioned, is foundational because a well-rested brain simply functions better. But beyond that, I've been practicing the '5-second rule' (or sometimes, the '10-second rule'!). Before speaking or acting on an impulse, I take a deep breath and count. It gives my prefrontal cortex a tiny window to catch up and consider the consequences. It’s not perfect, but it’s a muscle I’m constantly trying to strengthen. Remember, this is a journey, not a destination. What works one day might not work the next, and that's okay. The key is to keep experimenting and finding what supports your unique brain best!
