Swaps I made in my kitchen to eliminate toxins

2024/10/29 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! Building on my initial steps to a toxin-free kitchen, I wanted to dive deeper into some of the specific swaps that have truly made a difference for me, and address some common questions I hear about creating a healthier home. It's truly empowering to know you're making better choices for yourself and your loved ones. First, let's talk more about cooking utensils. My journey started by swapping out old plastic spatulas and spoons for beautiful wooden ones, just like the collection I now proudly display on my counter. Wooden utensils are not only aesthetically pleasing but also gentle on my cast iron pans – another fantastic non-toxic swap I wholeheartedly recommend! Besides wood, I've also embraced high-quality, food-grade silicone spatulas and whisk handles. They're super versatile and don't leach chemicals, especially when exposed to heat. Stainless steel utensils are also a durable and safe choice for many tasks. It’s a small change, but knowing I'm not stirring my food with heated plastic gives me so much peace of mind. Another area where I've seen huge benefits is in ditching aluminum foil. For years, it was a kitchen staple, but I've discovered some amazing non-toxic alternatives. For baking and roasting, parchment paper or reusable silicone baking mats are absolute game-changers. They work just as well, prevent sticking, and reduce waste. For covering dishes, I often reach for my trusty glass containers (inspired by my collection of reused glass jars!) or even stainless steel lids. A simple beeswax wrap can also be fantastic for keeping things fresh without any plastic or aluminum. And for all the coffee lovers out there, like me, wondering how to make coffee without plastic: it's totally achievable! I used to fret about plastic coming into contact with hot water, but I've found some wonderful solutions. My personal favorite is a French press made entirely of glass and stainless steel. It brews a fantastic cup and has zero plastic components touching the coffee. Pour-over setups with ceramic drippers and reusable stainless steel or cloth filters are another excellent option. Even some espresso machines now offer models with minimal plastic in the brew path. It's a small change that makes a big impact on your morning routine. When it comes to food storage, my collection of clear glass jars and containers has grown immensely. From leftover meals to pantry staples, switching from plastic has been one of the easiest and most effective swaps. I also love using stainless steel containers for packed lunches or snacks. They're durable, easy to clean, and completely non-toxic. And speaking of appliances, even seemingly innocuous items like a food processor can have plastic parts. I'm currently researching models with glass bowls and stainless steel blades to further reduce plastic exposure in my food prep – it’s amazing how many options are out there once you start looking! Finally, while my main focus started in the kitchen, I'm continually looking for ways to expand my toxin-free living throughout my entire home. For instance, have you ever thought about non-toxic home fragrance? Instead of synthetic air fresheners, I often use essential oil diffusers with pure oils, or simply open a window! And yes, even something as mundane as toilet paper can have non-toxic options, often made from bamboo or recycled materials without harsh chemicals or dyes. It really shows how many small choices add up to a healthier lifestyle. This journey is all about taking one step at a time. Every swap, big or small, contributes to a cleaner, healthier environment in your home. What non-toxic swap will you try next?

I absolutely love using bamboo utensils, but I highly recommend boiling them regularly. I wasn’t aware that’s what you’re suppose to do and would wash them like any other dish. The first time I boiled them, it was disgusting 😂 I ended up throwing them out & buying new ones.
