I reported abuse… and lost everything 😔

"I knew the risk. I knew he'd punish me. But I reported what my daughter told me because nothing matters more than her safety.

Now he's canceled the visitation agreement that allowed me to work. My income is gone. Our stability is gone. And my report went nowhere.

She's with him as I type this, and I'm sitting here sick, broke, and alone for two days.

I think I need a lawyer, but how do I afford one now?

... Read moreIt breaks my heart to hear your story. Taking that brave step to report abuse for your child's safety, only to face such devastating consequences, is a nightmare no parent should endure. Your feeling of being 'sick, broke, and alone' resonates with so many who have walked a similar path. But you are not alone, and there are resources and strategies to help navigate this incredibly challenging situation. One of the most immediate concerns you raised is affording a lawyer. It's true, legal fees can be daunting, especially when your income has been impacted. However, don't lose hope. Many avenues exist to find legal assistance. Start by looking for legal aid societies or pro bono services in your area; these organizations often offer free or low-cost legal representation for those who qualify, especially in domestic violence or child protection cases. Domestic violence shelters and support organizations often have legal advocates who can guide you or refer you to attorneys. Some attorneys offer free initial consultations, which can be invaluable for understanding your options and getting preliminary advice without commitment. Don't be afraid to ask about payment plans or sliding scale fees if you find a lawyer you connect with. Documenting everything – all communication, incidents, and financial impacts – will also be crucial for any legal proceedings. The text messages you've received from your co-parent paint a picture of extreme hostility, making 'coparenting' feel impossible. When dealing with an abuser, traditional co-parenting isn't safe or effective. Instead, consider parallel parenting, where interactions are minimal, structured, and focused solely on logistics. Communication should ideally be through documented channels like a co-parenting app (e.g., OurFamilyWizard) or email, never in person or via direct, volatile texts like those accusing you of 'fucking my life up' or calling you a 'crazy bitch.' These apps timestamp and store every message, creating an invaluable record for court. The OCR mentioned 'calling the cops twice' and 'restraining orders,' which are serious. Continue to document every threat, every perceived violation, and every instance of harassment. This evidence is vital for seeking or enforcing restraining orders and proving contempt of court if your co-parent violates existing orders or agreements. Regarding the canceled visitation agreement and threats of 'taking full custody,' this is a common tactic used by abusers to maintain control and inflict financial hardship. It's imperative to file a motion with the court as soon as possible to enforce the existing visitation order or to request a modification if circumstances have changed (e.g., safety concerns). If your child's safety is at risk, you can request supervised visitation for the other parent. The court prioritizes the child's best interests, and documented evidence of the co-parent's aggressive behavior and retaliation will be crucial in demonstrating why the original agreement should be reinstated or modified with safeguards. Don't let their threats intimidate you; the legal system has protections in place, even if they sometimes feel slow or ineffective. Finally, navigating this journey takes immense emotional and mental strength. Dealing with such intense conflict and financial pressure can be incredibly isolating. Seek out support groups for single mothers or survivors of domestic abuse. Sharing your story and hearing from others can validate your experiences and provide coping strategies. Prioritize small acts of self-care, even when it feels impossible. Your resilience in protecting your daughter is truly admirable. Keep fighting, keep documenting, and keep seeking the support you deserve.
