Running tips for my girlies....

2025/8/22 Edited to

... Read moreStarting a running journey can feel a little daunting, especially if you're new to it. But trust me, it's one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! As someone who's been there, I picked up some tried-and-true running tips that made all the difference. These aren't just for marathon runners, but for every girlie looking to build a healthy, sustainable running habit. Slow & Easy Wins the Race: Embrace the Walk/Run Method When I first started, I thought I had to run miles without stopping. Boy, was I wrong! The best advice I got was to just start moving, and that means incorporating walking. Remember, you're building a habit, not running a race right out of the gate. Begin with mixing jogging & walking intervals. For example, try jogging for 1 minute, then walking for 2 minutes, and repeat that for 20-30 minutes. Gradually, you can increase your jogging time and decrease your walking time. This method helps your body adapt, prevents injury, and makes running feel less intimidating. It’s all about listening to your body and celebrating every step, not just every mile! Your Feet Deserve the Best: Invest in Comfy Shoes! This is a non-negotiable! "Wear comfy shoes" isn't just a suggestion, it's crucial. I used to just grab any old trainers, but investing in good running shoes made a huge difference. My feet, knees, and even my mood thanked me! Head to a specialty running store where they can analyze your gait and recommend shoes that fit your foot type and running style. Beyond shoes, make sure your athletic wear is comfortable and moisture-wicking. And don't forget a good pair of headphones – they can make those runs fly by! Find Your Fun & Your Why: Make it Rewarding! Running shouldn't feel like a chore. One of the best ways to stay consistent is to make it rewarding. I loved using a running app that grew virtual plants for my runs – seeing those plant icons on my calendar for June 2025 was surprisingly motivating! Other ideas include treating yourself to a new running top after hitting a distance goal, or simply enjoying a delicious, healthy smoothie post-run. Track your total distance and time, celebrate personal bests, and find what genuinely makes you look forward to your next run. This makes building that habit so much easier. Consistency is Key: Aim for 2-3 Times a Week Life happens, right? I learned that showing up even for a short run is better than nothing. Aiming for "Run 2-3x a week" felt achievable and helped me build that solid habit without feeling overwhelmed. Don't beat yourself up if you miss a day; just lace up your shoes for the next planned session. The power of consistency means that even short, regular runs will give you amazing results over time. Remember, it's comfort + consistency = results, and those results aren't just physical, but mental too! Fuel Your Body & Stay Hydrated: Power Your Runs I quickly realized that what I ate before and after my runs made a huge difference in my energy levels. For pre-run fuel, something light like a banana or a piece of toast about an hour before can be perfect. Post-run, focus on a good mix of protein and carbs to help your muscles recover. And water? Always have your water bottle ready! Staying hydrated before, during, and after your runs is vital, especially for us girlies who might be more prone to dehydration. It helps with everything from energy levels to preventing cramps and generally feeling good during your run. So, there you have it! My top tips for getting started and loving your running journey. Remember, every runner was once a beginner, and with these simple steps, you'll be building strength, confidence, and a fantastic new habit in no time!
