Can you run a mile under 10 minutes?

Just starting to run? Try this beginner running challenge, completing a mile in under 10 mins.

Even if you’re in advanced runner, knowing your mile time as a baseline is beneficial. How fast can you run a mile? Go out and time yourself. Let me know your results in the comments.

Just starting out? Are you looking for a new challenge in your running? Do you want to test your speed and endurance? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then I challenge you to do a sub 10 minute mile!

A sub 10 minute mile is a common benchmark for many runners, especially beginners. It may sound easy, but it requires a lot of training, discipline, and determination.

To achieve a sub 10 minute mile, you need to work on your aerobic fitness, anaerobic threshold, and running economy.

👉 Here is a simple training plan.

2x a week run 1.5 miles within 20 minutes.

1x a week run 6 half mile intervals with 3-4 minutes rest in between.

Depending on how you feel, try a test run at that sub-10 minute mile after 2 weeks.

What are you waiting for? Lace up your shoes, hit the road, and run a sub 10 minute mile! You can do it!

... Read moreWhen I first decided to take on the challenge of running a sub-10 minute mile, I honestly wasn't sure if I could do it. But let me tell you, achieving this milestone felt incredible! It’s more than just a number; it’s a fantastic benchmark for anyone, especially beginners, looking to significantly improve their cardiovascular fitness and running efficiency. Many ask, "is running a mile in 10 minutes good?" And my answer is a resounding YES! It proves you have a solid fitness base and the dedication to push yourself. Before diving into a structured plan, I highly recommend assessing where you currently stand. The article mentioned timing your mile, which is a great start. Another useful benchmark I found, especially when considering overall fitness, is the 1.5 mile run test. This test is often used to gauge general aerobic endurance. To do it safely, make sure to warm up properly with a light jog and dynamic stretches for 5-10 minutes. Then, run 1.5 miles at a steady, challenging pace that you can maintain. Don't sprint! After completing the distance, cool down with walking and static stretches. Knowing your time for both a mile and 1.5 miles gives you valuable data to track your progress and understand your starting point. It's not about comparing yourself to others, but about seeing your own improvements. While the article provides a great simple training plan, I've picked up a few extra tips that really helped me boost my speed and endurance and conquer this beginner running challenge. First, pacing is key. A 10-minute mile means you need to maintain roughly a 1:30 pace for each quarter-mile. Practice running at this target pace for shorter durations, gradually increasing the distance. Apps with pace alerts can be super helpful! Secondly, don't underestimate the power of cross-training and strength work. Running is demanding, and building strength in your core, glutes, and legs not only prevents injuries but also makes you a more powerful and efficient runner. I incorporated two short sessions of bodyweight exercises (squats, lunges, planks) each week, and it made a noticeable difference in my running form and stamina. Flexibility, through stretching or yoga, also played a crucial role in my recovery and range of motion. Finally, remember that consistency and listening to your body are paramount. There will be days when you feel amazing, and days when it's a real struggle. That's totally normal! Prioritize rest days and fuel your body with nutritious food and plenty of water. I also found that visualizing myself crossing the finish line under 10 minutes really helped with mental toughness. Celebrate every small victory, whether it's running a little further or feeling stronger on your interval days. You've got this! Just keep lacing up those shoes and hitting the road.

1 mile In less Than 12 minutes
Key to doing 1 mile in 10 minutes is: 1. going before you eat or drink 2. Travel with little to nothing on you 3. deep breathe in your breaks 4. Don’t break longer than 30-45 seconds 5. Walk with hand on your hips or higher when breaking (this reduces light headedness) 6. Enjoy the jog..
